Our Story | Teal Anchor

Clear skin shouldn’t cost a fortune. And Teal Anchor founder Gillian knew it, after years of struggling with skin problems. Growing up, she found herself buying every skin care treatment without really taking time to read the labels. Gillian realized in her teen years that the answer might be to avoid harsh chemicals, such as alcohol, that were making her skin react even worse. The realization came from a surprising source: American Psycho.

The movie was a favorite, and achieving that lovely soft supple skin that Patrick Bateman described was at the top of her priority list.

“In the shower I use a water activated gel cleanser, then a honey almond body scrub, and on the face an exfoliating gel scrub. Then I apply an herb-mint facial mask, which I leave on for 10 minutes while I prepare the rest of my routine. I always use an after-shave lotion with little or no alcohol, because alcohol dries your face out and makes you look older. Then moisturizer, then an anti-aging eye balm followed by a final moisturizing protective lotion.” – Patrick Bateman (American Psycho)

The perfect opportunity to explore other skincare options came when Gillian found herself at a loss for what to give friends and family as Christmas presents, two years ago. After finding some simple DIY face scrub recipes on Pintrest (sugar, tea tree essential oil and coconut oil) she decided to try them out—and they worked great! Christmas present dilemma solved.

The scrubs were put in a wee basket, with some instructions on how to use them, and that was the beginning of Teal Anchor. The next year some scrubs were sent to Gillian’s now business partner, Sara, who replied with a simple message, “I WANT IN! You have the recipes, and I have the business. 50/50 partnership!”

When something like this happens you run with it. Within the next weeks, they had a website up and running, a professional photo shoot booked, and they were talking about getting testing certificates.

Since then, Teal Anchor is still on a mission to bring skincare products that are made naturally and with your skin in mind. With years of personal experience as a foundation, the future of skincare is looking bright.
